NO SHOW JONES!

James 5:16 The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

Have you ever taken a wrong turn in your life?  Have you ever taken a path that you later regretted? Have you ever gone down a proverbial street in life & then realized you were going the wrong way down a one way street?  Have you ever done something so bad that you later said to yourself “What was I thinking”, and then you realized you weren’t thinking at all. Let me tell you about a guy who has done all of the above and then some!

His name is George Jones! He was often referred to as one of the greatest country singers of all time. In his lifetime he had more than 150 hits. He lived to the age of 81 but it was nothing short of a miracle that he lasted that long. He has a long history of alcoholism, drug abuse and relationship problems. He was so unreliable and missed so many of his shows that he earned the nickname: No Show Jones! It seemed George was determined to throw his talent down the drain.

George was so far down the wrong road of life that it seemed that there was no way out. And from a human prospective, there was no way out!

George was so deep into alcoholism that he would go to any lengths to get a drink. One time his second wife Shirley hid his car keys so George could not drive the 8 miles to the liquor store. That didn’t faze him one bit. He hopped on their riding lawnmower and drove 8 miles right down the main highway to get to the liquor store. It took him almost 2 hours but he was determined to get that drink.

Anybody that knew him would tell you that he was destined for an early grave. However, God had a different plan for George.   God figured that the answer to George’s problem was a guy by the name of Jesus. In an interview with CBN George talked about his journey towards Jesus. He told of how he had fallen so far & abused his body so much, that his weight fell to around 105 pounds. The doctor told him he wouldn’t make it another 2 months if he didn’t change. He went into a Birmingham hospital and spent 30 days praying and reading the Bible. The Bible was one of the books George had always believed in, but truth be told he didn’t pay much attention to it until he was in the hospital. That Bible & Georges prayers brought forth a new found commitment to Jesus and paved his way back from a certain death. And while the rest of his life wasn’t perfect, God blessed him with many more years until his eventual death at the age of 81.

How about you? Have you (much like George Jones) taken some wrong turns in life? Have you gone down some paths you later regretted? Have you gone the wrong way down some one way streets where you saw no way back? Are you thinking that God has no use for you? If so, think again! The Bible tells us that God picks the most unlikely people to do good for his Kingdom. That list of unlikely people includes you! No matter what you’ve done; where you’ve been or how many No Shows you’ve had, God can (and will) use you.

God didn’t give up on George Jones and
he won’t give up on you!
