David Timothy has a fan club. He’s not a rock star, entertainer or public figure. This quiet unassuming guy is popular with the street people, who refer to him as the Soup Man. He runs a ‘mobile’ soup kitchen. David and his volunteers go where the homeless are. He finds them under bridges, behind dumpsters, in the woods and on the streets. An exempt charity, The SoupMobile now serves approximately 4000 meals per month.

David says, “Sometimes people make the remark, ‘why can’t they get a job?’ It’s not that easy to get a job when you’re on the streets. You don’t have an address, access to clean clothes, haircuts, transportation and the things we all take for granted. Sadly, there are a lot of skilled, educated and talented people who find themselves in this position.”

Most of us don’t realize that there are children who live on the street. The SoupMobile runs a birthday program for children who are staying in shelters. On the child’s birthday he shows up with a cake and presents. Normally these children would get nothing on their birthday.

David devotes 60 hours a week delivering food and hope to the homeless. His compensation is $1 per month.

How can you help? David says he would like to serve more meat in the sandwiches. Because of limited funds he serves a lot of peanut butter.

“Any type of meat would be welcome,” he says. “Of course, a financial donation goes a long way. Also, the current SoupMobile van has over 270,000 miles and requires constant maintenance and upkeep. Any type of donation including old cars would be greatly appreciated.”

You can donate by sending a check or money order to SoupMobile, 3017 Commerce Street in Dallas, 75226. For information call 1-800-375-5022 or log onto www.soupmobile.org.
