SoupMobile

FAQs
What is the SoupMobile?
The SoupMobile is a 'mobile' soupkitchen that started on a wing and a prayer (s) in 2003 in Dallas, Texas. We currently serve more than 200,000 meals per year to the homeless in the Dallas area.

Does the SoupMobile do more than just feed the homeless?
Yes, In 2009 the SoupMobile expanded its feeding mission to also include 'Housing the Homeless.'  Our housing program is called SoupMobile Village. The Village is a series of group homes located in the Dallas area. Each home specifically designed to take a homeless man or woman right off the streets, put a roof over their heads, clean them up, help get them a job and return them as productive working members of the community. It's a 'Hand Up', not a 'Hand Out.'
Every year since 2005 the SoupMobile has put on a magical Christmas event called Celebrate Jesus. The SoupMobile takes 500 (YES 500) homeless men and women right off the streets and puts them up at the downtown Dallas Hyatt Regency Hotel for Christmas each year. They all receive new clothes, fabulous gifts, lots of love and we throw a huge banquet for them and in their honor. Most important in that when they wake up on Christmas morning it’s in a warm safe bed at the Hyatt--NOT in a cardboard box under some bridge.

Do you need volunteers for your Celebrate Jesus Christmas event? If so, how do I sign up?
Yes, we do need volunteers for the event. Typically we get more than 1,500 volunteers to come down to the downtown Dallas Hyatt Regency Hotel and help us with the event each year. The magic date to remember is November 1st. On that date each year the SoupMobile's website www.soupmobile.org goes live with all the Celebrate Jesus information. It lists all the Christmas volunteer opportunities and you can sign up right on line. One caveat, it's first come first serve. While we do get 1,500 volunteers each year we also end of turning away hundreds more who wait too late to sign up.

What about volunteering with the SoupMobile  all through the year?
Throughout the year the SoupMobile is blessed by many individuals, groups, organizations, businesses and Churches that come and volunteer with us in both cooking and serving the food to the homeless. To learn more about volunteering simply go to the SoupMobile's website www.soupmobile.org and click on VOLUNTEER.

Are you a registered 501 (c) (3) charity with the Internal Revenue Service?
Absolutely! The SoupMobile was originally granted its 501 (c)(3) tax exempt status in January 2004. That means that any donations you make to the SoupMobile in the forms of monies or in kind goods are tax deductible as allowed by law.

So exactly where do you get your funding?
Good question! Goods works don't come free. Even though the SoupMobile is a charity we are required by the IRS to run it as a business with proper accounting and financial controls. We get our funding from three primary sources. 1. Private donations by individuals. 2. Donations by businesses, churches and other organizations. 3. Grants from foundations that specialize in homeless issues.

We know the SoupMobile needs financial support to make it all happen but do you need any other kinds of donations?
In addition to year around financial support, the SoupMobile gratefully accepts donations of food, clothing and toiletries.

In recent years there has been a lot of negative information about charities---things like fraud, embezzlement, misspending, diversion of donations, big shots staying in penthouse suites and driving fancy cars. Why should I give to the SoupMobile?
If you have any doubts about the SoupMobile, please do NOT give to us. However let me tell you a few things that may ease your mind. The SoupMobile is an open book. We are committed to being transparent and open to you. One way we do this is to post every single tax return that the SoupMobile has filed since 2003 on our SoupMobile website. And let me tell you that the IRS asks for a lot of information on those tax returns. At the click of a button you can look at our innermost finances by reviewing those tax returns. We have nothing to hide!

So SoupMan, you have devoted your life to helping the homeless. Why?
Excellent question. I was never homeless myself but I grew up in a household where food was scarce. As a child I experienced hunger first hand. It wasn't just the hunger but the fear of the next meal not being there. My childhood of hunger has given me an incredible compassion for the homeless who struggle to find food every day.
